Not to the Cross

Not to the cross, but to Christ let me cling.
O not to a symbol of shame!
No tree is able, Salvation to bring.
Peace is found in Jesus' sweet name!

My friend, not to Calvary's hill will I go,
Thinking to find my Lord there;
Nor, to the tomb where His body was laid.
HE is risen! HE lives everywhere!

Not to a shroud -- some claim to be His --
Would I turn, seeking healing there.
Not in the grave clothes would I seek life.
Christ is Life and HE lives everywhere!

No, it wasn't the cross or His grave clothes
That held the very power of life.
I'll look to the Savior, the King of all kings --
The Truth, the Way, the Life -- Jesus Christ!

By the mercies of God,

None HIS Equal

GOD speaks -- HIS will is done.
HIS sun obeys in certain track.
HIS springs arise -- their waters flow.
Mists arise to heavens, back.

Barren trees of winter wake;
Swelling buds unfurl as leaves;
Good seeds sown into rich soil
Sprout, by GOD's power, as these.

All these things and countless more
Are wrought by Almighty GOD.
HE's absolutely unparalleled.
Heaven's hosts His Name applaud!

Consider HIM Who knows all things
And meted out heaven with the span --
The glorious Lord of infinite sight --
HE condescended for fallen man!

by mercies of GOD,
[Peggy Hood, 4-24-2008]

HOLY BIBLE, KJV -- Isaiah 40:12 "Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?"

Isaiah 40:25-26 "25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things , that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth."

Accusing Voice

Whose, the accusing voice
That tells me I'm not fit;
That, railing, tells me how I fail
And urges me to quit?

I know that it is not my Lord's.
HE's so merciful and kind.
HE gave Himself for ones like me --
HE's loving all the time!

That hurtful voice would nag away --
My peace of mind, destroy;
But, for my Lord's comforting
With sweet words of peace and joy.

How His soothing encourages --
Through my trials, to look ahead.
HE came to earth to live and die
And suffered in my stead.

HE washed my sins clean away!
HE lifts me up when I fall.
HE instructs -- I'm to trust HIM.
HE's Deliverer -- my ALL!

O my friends, so often I fail.
My shortcomings are plain.
But, let me turn my eyes to Christ,
While the accuser rants in vain.

By the mercies of God,

Hush Child

Hush, child; hush. Your FATHER's with you.
Hush, child; hush. You're in His hands.
Trust, child; trust. HE'll ne'er forsake you.
You're precious to HIM -- understand.

Hush, child; hush. Don't fret or worry;
Hush, child; hush. You need not fear.
Trust, child; trust. Lean on your Savior!
For you, HE tenderly cares.

Hush, child; now hush your sad weeping;
Hush, child; hush. HE'll dry your tears.
You're not alone. GOD understands.
Remember -- the LORD is always near.

Considering Life

It came not by my works, nor by yours;
It's not by things we here achieve;
It's not about strength of selves;
It's no result of what we believe.

Life came not by our worthiness,
Nor by diplomas one would hold;
It can't be result of our belongings --
It's not of chance that life unfolds.

The strength we have is not of selves.
Life wasn't authored by mortal plan;
But, was given, and is sustained, by GOD.
Life is wholly of HIM; not of man!

How High is Your Mountain

How high is your mountain, pilgrim --
The mountain before you now?
Are its peaks unseen as yet,
Wholly obscured by threatening clouds?

Tell, what path are you taking?
Is it narrow with cliffs at the sides?
Do dangers loom at every hand?
Do you seek covert in which to hide?

Is your mountain too high to measure?
Can you not climb it in your strength?
It matters not; child; rest in the LORD.
HE will deliver you at length!

April-in-Georgia Freeze

In early April, wind gusts blew --
Like those of a typical March.
Now, it's forecast that April 16
Here will have a freezing start.

O but the lilies have vigorous growth!
And, other tender plants may die.
Some apple trees are in full bloom.
Will their flowers be killed tonight?

The faithful gardener tends his plants,
Knowing full well GOD's in control
Of all things man cannot touch.
HIS wonders -- GOD's wonders-- daily unfold.

By the mercies of God,

Dead Leaves

Have you noticed last year's leaves,
Through Winter months, were held
Tightly on the white oak trees
Till Spring arrived full well?

Dead leaves -- no life in them.
What's different about these?
You know dead leaves can't cling!
Then, how could sapless trees?

Ah, but now begins new growth
To purge those lifeless leaves.
Perhaps we're like the white oaks,
When to former things we cling.

Haven't we been born again?
May we glorify the LORD, too,
In letting go of things past.
HE gives us apparel - new!

The Morning View

It seems the far green hill speaks peace;
The works of GOD -- declares,
As I consider the unbroken calm
Of creatures grazing there.

Contented horses; sometimes, deer --
I stop to view from time to time.
I observe from the wooded hill
And meditate on blessings, mine.

There -- animals are being fed.
Here, too, we're blessed with food.
How GOD provides for His creatures!
How lovely, the morning view!

Fitted for Gifts

Can a man desire things of GOD --
Peace and joy and Hope and trust,
Unless he's fitted for these things,
Given of GOD a new heart first?

Could any follow in the Lord's paths
If not first blessed by light?
Would any have desire to stay
In GOD's will? -- without inward sight?

Eyes are useless without light.
Love-less is a stone cold heart.
Though evil brings forth nothing good,
Gifts of Love, our LORD imparts.

From Brook to Sea

It seems -- life here begins like a brook
That races merrily along
To converge with greater stream
Which has more depth of song.

We're joined in the great stream of life.
Even as a mighty river slows
And joins the boundless sea --
Our time on earth quickly goes.

Ah, but the ONE Who made the brook,
Who gives babes natural life,
Holds the sea in full control
And gives HIS children eternal life!

By the mercies of God,

The Lord's Alone

The Lord had "not where to lay His head".
Even, in another's tomb He was laid.
Yet, the worst suffering was His alone,
On the cross, where, our debts He paid.

The sealed, guarded tomb was not His home.
His grave clothes, He laid aside --
He rose up -- with complete power again;
And, returned to the FATHER on high!

Back He ascended to Heaven,
Works of Salvation, He'd finished here.
GOD's Word never returns to HIM void,
But fulfills HIS pleasure -- it's clear.

by mercies of GOD,
[Peggy Hood, 4-3-2008]

Blustery April Morning

What a blustery April morning!
Winds are cavorting from East;
The atmosphere's not balmy,
With such winds as these.

Is March attempting to return --
Reversing upon its track,
Blustering, having a tantrum
To bring its symbols back?

O my, it's a lively morning
This third of April day!
I'll wrap up to pick some greens
And hurry back in right away.

By the mercies of God,
