Trust in the Lord

Psalms 9:10 - And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

This morning I am happy to know the Lord. David does not say that to know the Lord is to trust him. David is saying that those who understand that the Lord is God of all will put their trust in him rather than earthly vices.

The word trust used here means to have confidence and hope in God. Those who are blessed “to know” God can have hope in no other than God because they understand that there simply is no other hope to be found.

I am happy this morning to know that God is real and that he is able and that there is none other like him or that can be compared to him.

Amen

My Lord and My God

John 20:28 - And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Thomas is an example of mankind to me. Our loved ones and trusted friends can bring us the strongest of evidence that Christ is here and alive and still we will have our doubts. But when Christ makes his presents known there is nothing we can say but “My Lord and My God”. Thomas did not need to do the things he thought he would have to do be convinced that his Lord was alive.

We may be living through the worst of life’s trials and feel that the only way for us to survive is for Christ to come and take us away to be with him. But when he comes we are comforted and life goes on. How Christ is able to still our troubled hearts and never really change anything is beyond me. But I am glad he is able to do just that.

Amen

Hide Thou Me
L.R, Talbert

Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my life in vain, I’m tempted then to murmur, and of my lot complain; But when I think of Jesus, and all He’s done for me, Then I cry, O Rock of ages, Hide Thou me.

O Rock of Ages, Hide Thou me, No other Refuge have I but Thee, When life’s dark vale I wander, Far, far from Thee; Then I cry, O Rock of Ages Hide Thou me.

Sometimes it seems I dare not go one step farther on, And from my heart all courage has disappeared and gone; But I remember Jesus, and all His love for me, Then I cry, O Rock of Ages, Hide Thou me.

O Rock of Ages, Hide Thou me, No other Refuge have I but Thee, When life’s dark vale I wander, Far, far from Thee; Then I cry, O Rock of Ages Hide Thou me.

O what a Friend is Jesus, sure Anchor for my soul, So tender, true and gracious, I’m safe in His control; My help in time of danger, my strong defense is He, O Thou blessed Rock of Ages, Hide Thou me.

O Rock of Ages, Hide Thou me, No other Refuge have I but Thee, When life’s dark vale I wander, Far, far from Thee; Then I cry, O Rock of Ages Hide Thou me.

Amen and Amen!

He Died For Me
Elder Clifford Gowens

Sometimes when I think of the cross, I find much sorrow there; To think of such a perfect life He gave without a tear.

My savior died for me, He bled and died for me; His life so perfect and mine so worthless, He bled and died for me.

The nails that pierced His hands and feet, The crown of thorns He wore; That woeful sword that pierced His side, the guilt of sin He bore.

My savior died for me, He bled and died for me; His life so perfect and mine so worthless, He bled and died for me.

I was so lost and full of sin And sin so full in me; So weak and worthless, sick and sore, Undone without a plea.

My savior died for me, He bled and died for me; His life so perfect and mine so worthless, He bled and died for me.

But Jesus came to that old cross, And shed His blood for me; And sorrow turned to happiness; He rose to victory.

My savior died for me, He bled and died for me; His life so perfect and mine so worthless, He bled and died for me.

Amen

OUR GOD!

Psalms 115:3 - But our God [is] in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

Psalms 24:1 - The earth [is] the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

Psalms 89:11 - The heavens [are] thine, the earth also [is] thine: [as for] the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

Our God is Lord of:

Hosts
Harvests
Vineyards
Earth
Lords
Sabaoths
Glory
Peace
Heaven
All

Is there anything that is beyond his reach? Is there anything that is to hard for his almighty power? Our God is where ever we are. He is in the sea. He is in the air. He is on the land. He has walked the earth and known it’s hidden parts from before the beginning of time. Out God is God.

Can we hide from him that he can not find us? His eye has viewed the beginning with the end. Can we fall from his hand that he can not catch us. His hand holds this world and all that is.

Our God is Lord, Master of all.

Amen

Grace, ‘Tis A Charming Sound
Philip Doddridge 1702-1751

2 Corinthians 12:9 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Grace ‘tis a charming sound, Harmonious to the ear! Heav’n with the echo shall resound, And all the saints shall hear.

Grace first contrived the way To save rebellious man; And all the steps that grace display Which drew the wondrous plan.

Grace first inscribed my name In God’s eternal book; “Twas grace that gave me to the Lamb, Who all my sorrows took.

Grace led my roving feet To tread the heav’nly road; And new supplies each hour I meet, While pressing on to God.

Grace taught my soul to pray, And made mine eyes o’er flow; “Twas grace kept me to this day, And will not let me go.

Grace all the work shall crown Thru everlasting days; It lays in Heav’n the top most stone, And well deserves the praise.

Oh! For A Breeze Of Heavenly Love
Old School Hymnal #213

Oh, for a breeze of heav'nly love
to waft my soul away
To that celestial world above
Where pleasures ne'er decay
Eternal Spirit deign to be
My Pilot here below
To steer thru life's tempestuous sea,
Where stormy winds do blow.

I need the influence of Thy grace
To speed me on my way,
Lest I should loiter in my race,
Or turn my feet astray,
Are not thy mercies sovereign still,
And Thou a faithful God,
Wilt Thou not grant me warmer zeal
To run the heav'nly road.

From rocks of pride on either hand,
From quick sands of despair,
Oh, guide me safe on Canaan's land,
Thru ev'ry latent snare,
Anchor me in that port above,
On that celestial shore
Where dashing billows never move,
Where tempests never roar.

Amen

Slippings

Psalms 17:5 - Hold up my goings in thy paths, [that] my footsteps slip not.
Psalms 94:18 - When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

David asked the Lord to hold him up, to keep him from falling if things got out of his control. David said when things did get out of control the Lord did not let me fall. The use of the word slip brings to mind those things that seem to be in our grasp but when we try to close our hand around them we can not hold on them. Or those situations that seem to be on solid firm ground but when we try to stand upon them we find ourselves unable to keep ourselves upright.

If we had a sign to warn us about the hazards of life it would have to read: Warning!!! Life is slippery when wet, slippery when dry, slippery when cold, slippery when hot, and slippery as long as you live. The hazards of life often happen so fast we do not even have time to think about what is happening to us. Anyone of us that has ever slipped on a wet floor understands just how fast and easy slipping can be.

David asked his Lord to protect him from slip hazards. Then he tells us that when he did slip his Lord caught him and held him up.

Amen

How Sweet To Die

In memory of Elder S.A, Paine and his last words, “Oh, how sweet to die.”

Farewell, vain world I’m going home, My Savior bids me come, Sweet angels beckon form on high, Then, O how sweet to die.

I’m glad that I am born to die, From grief my soul shall fly, Sweet angels beckon form on high, Then, O how sweet to die.

I’ll praise my Savior while I’ve breath, I’ll praise his matchless name on high, Then, O how sweet to die.

I soon shall pass this vale of death, When I shall lose my breath, And then my happy soul shall fly, Then, O how sweet to die.

I am sure that some find the word comfort and words like those above at odds with each other. But I gain comfort, strength, and courage in the knowledge that this life is not all there is. To think that someday, when “My Savior bids me come,” I will leave behind all those things that today are pain and sadness and go to be with him in glory. I do long for that day but, I not intend to speed it along. But, O how sweet to die.

Amen

John 6:39

John 6:39 - And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

This verse of scripture teaches me four very important things.

First our Father is a willful God, He is a God of purpose. He has a plan and he has seen the end of his plan as though it has already been finished. He is a God that changes not, “For I am the LORD, I change not”.

Second God has a people that are his. We may argue over who they are and how many but this verse teaches that God has some people and he gave them to his Son to save. If they had not of belonged to God he could not have legally given them to Christ. And we now that God is not a thief to give that which is not his to give.

Third Christ came to save. And He did. God send Christ into this world die for those that he gave him. Not a single one of those who God gave to Christ to save will be lost. When Christ said on the cross “It is finished.” He was referring not only to his suffering and his life here on earth but, also the work required for the salvation of those the Father had given him.

Forth God’s people will be with him in heaven. Whoever these people are that belonged to God, the ones he gave to Christ to save, their final resting place will be with God in heaven. Because Christ said, he is coming back to get them on the last day.

Amen

Thinking About God

Consider that God was there (where ever there is) before the beginning and that he will be there after the end.

Consider that “In the beginning God” refers to the beginning of earth and time.

Consider that God made everything that was made and that without him there was nothing made.

Consider that there is nothing known that God does not know.

If these statements are true then how is it possible that anything belonging to God could ever be in jeopardy?

Is it possible that one of that is God’s children could ever be lost?

Is it possible that a child of God who is to live in eternity with him in not known of God?

Is it possible for that which is not known of God to make its self known of God?

Is it possible that anyone not belonging to God could change the knowledge of God and make himself belong to God?

I submit that if God knows something it is from eternity to eternity. If God knows you as one of His then that knowledge is from eternity to eternity and can never be changed? If God does not know you as one of His that too is form eternity to eternity.

Amen

Time

Psalms 31:15 - My times [are] in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Psalms 27:5 - For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Psalms 32:6 - For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Psalms 37:39 - But the salvation of the righteous [is] of the LORD: [he is] their strength in the time of trouble.

Psalms 41:1 - Blessed [is] he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

Psalms 56:3 - What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Psalms 69:13 - But as for me, my prayer [is] unto thee, O LORD, [in] an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

Time and times are both in the hand of the Lord, both the good times and the bad times. Is there a time when the Lord can not hear your cry? I am sure that there are times when like a parent God does not respond to our crying but I believe that he always hears his children. Is there a time when God is not able to help his children? David said, “in the time of trouble he shall hide me”, “he is their strength in time of trouble”, “the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble”, and “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Did David leave any time out? Is there anytime that we can not trust in the Lord? Is there any time we can not call upon the Lord?

I am so thankful this morning that “My times are in thy hand:”.

Amen

How Oft, Alas! This Wretched Heart

Annie Steele 1776-1778

How oft, alas! This wretched heart
Has wondered from the Lord;

How oft my roving thoughts depart,
Forgetful of his word!

Yet sovereign mercy calls return,
Dear Lord and may I come?

My vile ingratitude I mourn:
O, take the wonderer home.

And canst Thou, wilt Thou yet forgive,
And bid my crimes remove?

And shall a pardoned rebel live
To speak Thy wondrous love?

Almighty grace, Thy healing power
How glorious how divine!

That can to life and bliss restore
So vile a heart as mine.

Thy pardoning love, so free, so sweet,
Dear Savior, I adore;

O, keep me at Thy sacred feet,
And let me rove no more.

Amen

Thank You Lord

Thank you dear Lord for all the blessings and kindnesses you have shown me. I beg you to forgive for all the times that I consider the trials and troubles of this life ahead of thy blessings. Continue to consider me in thy righteousness. Do not forget me nor leave me to myself. As much as I love thee I know that left to myself I would so be as the unregenerated.

Help me O Lord to know how to live in this world. Guide my mind and my feet in such away that I will be able to live a life that pleasing to thee. Help to show mercy and kindness if the face of those situations in life that would cause my nature to want to do otherwise. Thou art my strength do not leave me to myself.

Remember my family and their needs bless and keep them according to thy understanding of their needs. So I often I think I know what is best for them but, your word teaches me that you are the one who has viewed the beginning with the end and that has numbered the hairs of out heads. Keep watch over them I beg.

Remember our nation, its leaders, and those who stand in the gap between us and danger. Grant them strength and wisdom. Guide them O Lord as only you can.

I know dear Lord that there in much that I have not thanked you for and asked that is needed. But I beg that you remember us all in thy tender mercy.

Amen

My King

I have heard this sermon before and enjoyed it. I just recently received in print. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Jesse

~~~~~~~~
My King
Dr. S.M. Lockridge
My King was born King; the Bible says He's the seven-way King.
He's the King of the Jews- that's a racial King. He's the King of Israel - that's a national king. He's the King of righteousness, He's the King of the ages, He's the King of heaven, He's the King of glory, He's the King of kings and He is the Lord of lords.
Now, that's my King. "Well, I wonder if you know Him. Do you know Him? Don't try to mislead me - do you know my King?
David said, "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth His handiwork."
My King is the only one, Whom there is no means of measure can define His limitless love. No far-seeing telescope can bring into visibility the coastline of His shoreless supplies. No barriers can hinder Him from pouring out His blessing. Well...well...
He's enduringly strong, He's entirely sincere, He's eternally steadfast, He's immortally graceful, He's imperially powerful, He's impartially merciful. That's my King!
He's God's Son, He's the sinner's Savior. He's the centerpiece of civilization, He stands alone in Himself. He's august, He's unique, He's unparalleled, He's unprecedented. He's Supreme, He's preeminent,
Why He's the loftiest idea in literature....He's the highest personality in philosophy....He's the supreme problem in high criticism....He's the fundamental doctrine of true theology....He's the cardinal necessity of spiritual religion. That's my king!
He's the miracle of the age. He's the superlative of everything good that you choose to call Him. Well, He is the only one able to supply all of our needs simultaneously. He supplies strength for the weak. He's available for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He saves.
He guards and He guides.
He heals the sick.
He cleanses the lepers.
He forgives sinners.
He discharges debtors.
He delivers the captives. He defends the feeble. He blesses the young. He serves the unfortunate. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent, and He beautifies the meek. Do you know Him? Well, my King is the Key of knowledge. He's the Wellspring of Wisdom, He's the Doorway of Deliverance. He's the Pathway of Peace, He's the Roadway of Righteousness, He's the Highway of Holiness, He's the Gateway of Glory. He's the Master of the mighty, He's the Captain of the conquerors, He's the Head of the heroes and He's the Leader of the legislators! He's the Overseer of the overcomers, He's the Governor of governors. He's the Prince of princes, He's the King of kings, and He's the Lord of lords. That's my King. Yea !! Yeah !! That's my King!! My King.
His office is manifold and His promise is sure. His light is matchless, His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting, His love never changes. His Word is enough, His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous, His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Well, I wish I could describe Him to you, but He's indescribable! He's indescribable. Yeah... He's incomprehensible, He's invincible, He's irresistible.
I'm trying to tell you the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him, let alone a man explain Him! You can't get Him out of your mind. You can't get Him off of your hands. You can't out live Him and you can't live without Him! Well, Pharisees couldn't stand Him but they found out they couldn't stop Him. Pilot couldn't find any fault in Him. The witnesses couldn't get their testimonies to agree. Herod couldn't kill Him. Death couldn't handle Him and the grave couldn't hold Him. That's my King! Yeah !!
He always has been and He always will be. I'm talking about, He had no predecessor and He'll have no successor. There was nobody before Him and there'll be nobody after Him. You can't impeach Him and He's not gonna resign. That's my King! Praise the Lord
Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory. Well, all the power belongs to my King. We around here talk about black-power, and white-power, and green-power, but it's God's power! Thine is the power yeah...and the glory! We are trying to get prestige and honor and glory for ourselves but the glory is all His. Yeah... Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever and ever and ever (how long is that?) and ever and ever and ever and ever. And when you get through with all of the forevers, then - "Amen!"
